Description
Concrete side sluice with timber lifting gate, upstream of the town flour mill originally powered by a chalk stream. The sluice takes flow from the main stream into a bypass channel which was probably to provide means of controlling the flow of water into the mill. This sluice is now set in a fixed position, so that the flow is not greater than the limited culvert capacity downstream. in order to prevent flooding. The small bridge across the bypass gives access to an Environment Agency river monitoring station, part of the flood management warning scheme.
